The Woolly Worm – Olive is the Woolly Bugger's venerable ancestor: an olive chenille body palmered end-to-end with hackle over a short red tail tag. It predates most of the fly box and still out-fishes much of it—a buggy silhouette that reads as dragonfly nymph, cased caddis, or general aquatic life.
Olive is the natural setting, at home in weedy stillwaters and slow river edges where olive-toned invertebrates dominate. Fish it dead-drift, on a slow swing, or crawled along a lake bottom; the palmered hackle pulses through all three.
Best for:
- Stillwaters and weedy slow water
- Dragonfly nymph and general bug drifts
- Trout, panfish, and bass
📌 Pro Tip: Crawl it along stillwater bottoms with a hand-twist retrieve—the hackle breathes at speeds a Bugger's marabou needs current to match.
