Micro Chubby Chernobyl - Light Green (Katydid)

The Micro Chubby Chernobyl – Light Green, nicknamed “Katydid,” is a compact but buoyant foam terrestrial fly inspired by the appearance of real katydids, grasshoppers, and leafhoppers. With its bright light green body, white hi-vis wing, and rubber legs, this fly is perfect for imitating the accidental landings of terrestrial insects that trout love to ambush from beneath overhanging banks and grassy shorelines.

Built on a double foam body, the Katydid version offers impressive flotation for its small size. It’s an ideal dry fly for tight-stream pocket water or clear, calm tailwaters where fish have seen too many standard hopper patterns. The subtle chartreuse-green tone appeals to trout feeding selectively on terrestrials, while the micro profile minimizes refusals and makes it perfect for finicky eaters.

This fly performs best from midsummer into early fall, particularly during the height of terrestrial season when katydids and hoppers are active. Fish it as a single dry fly along grassy edges, or pair it with a lightweight nymph like a Frenchie or Perdigon in a dry-dropper setup to reach fish holding deeper. The high-vis wing also helps detect subtle takes, especially in broken or shaded water.
