The Micro Chubby Chernobyl – Purple, affectionately nicknamed “Barney,” is a vibrant foam terrestrial pattern that punches above its weight. Don’t let its small size fool you—this fly is built for performance in clear water and technical conditions. The bright purple body color stands out in a variety of light conditions, making it easy to track on the drift while also providing just enough flash to trigger curiosity and strikes from wary trout.
Constructed with a double foam body, elk hair wing, and lively rubber legs, the Barney version of the Micro Chubby stays high on the water, even when used to support small beadhead droppers. The purple coloration mimics a range of terrestrial insects and attractor-style bugs, while the high-floating design ensures long drifts and visibility in broken water.
This pattern shines in late summer and early fall, especially during terrestrial activity when fish are looking up for hoppers, beetles, and ants. It’s also highly effective in tight pocket water, spring creeks, and tailwaters where a full-sized Chubby might be overkill. Fish it as a single dry for surface takes, or in a dry-dropper rig with a small nymph or emerger pattern suspended below.
