The Pink Scud is a highly effective subsurface pattern designed to imitate freshwater scuds—small aquatic crustaceans that are a critical food source for trout, especially in spring creeks, tailwaters, and stillwaters. The soft pink coloration mimics the natural hues of live or recently dead scuds and can also serve as a subtle attractor, making it a top producer in clear or lightly stained water.
Tied with translucent dubbing, ribbing for segmentation, and often finished with a beadhead for weight, the Pink Scud offers a realistic profile and natural movement when drifted near the bottom. It’s especially productive during cooler months and in spring-fed systems where scuds are present year-round.
To fish the Pink Scud effectively, dead drift it under an indicator or euro nymph it along weed beds, gravel bottoms, and current seams. It works well as the dropper in a two-fly rig or as a solo fly during periods of low hatch activity when trout are keyed in on small, protein-rich prey.
