The Mayfly – Olive is a subtle and effective dry fly designed to imitate olive-bodied adult mayflies, including the ever-important Blue-Winged Olive (BWO). With its slim olive body, upright wings, and delicately tied hackle, this fly offers a natural profile that excels in fooling selective trout during BWO and other olive-toned mayfly hatches.

This pattern shines during spring and fall when Baetis hatches dominate the surface activity, especially on overcast days or during late afternoon emergence windows. Its low-floating profile and muted coloration make it especially useful on technical water where trout are cautious and conditions are calm.

Use a dead drift with minimal drag for best results. It can be fished alone or paired with an emerger in a dry-dropper rig during active hatches. A touch of floatant on the wings and thorax keeps it riding just right in the surface film to match the natural duns.
