The Nine Three is a Maine legend—named for the 9-pound, 3-ounce landlocked salmon that christened it in the 1930s. Its green-over-black hair wing above a white bucktail belly and silver body nails the dorsal-to-belly shading of a smelt, a profile that has anchored New England streamer boxes for nearly a century.
The Nine Three's enduring trick is contrast without gaudiness: the dark green back reads naturally from above and the white belly flashes from the side, so the fly looks right from every angle a predator approaches. It excels cast or trolled, in rivers and lakes alike, whenever trout and salmon are eating baitfish.
Best for:
- Landlocked salmon and trout on smelt waters
- Low light and lightly stained water
- Covering water by cast, swing, or troll
📌 Pro Tip: When salmon chase but refuse on the troll, drop the rod tip to throw slack for a two-count, then sweep it forward—the stall-and-bolt is the most reliable trigger a smelt imitation can offer.
