The Hornberg is New England's everything fly: mallard flank wings tented over a silver tinsel body with grizzly hackle. Fished dry it's a caddis or small moth; pulled under and stripped it's a streamer. One fly, both jobs, since the 1920s.
That double life is why Northeastern boxes never lack one—float it through the pool, and when the drift ends, sink it and strip back. Two presentations per cast.
Best for:
- Dry-then-wet double duty
- Brook trout ponds and freestones
- Caddis cover and baitfish suggestion
📌 Pro Tip: Fish the whole lifecycle in one cast—dead-drift it dry, let it drown at the seam, then strip it home; the take often comes the instant it goes under.
