The Hex Nymph is a realistic imitation of the burrowing Hexagenia limbata mayfly in its aquatic nymph stage—an essential food source for trout, bass, and other freshwater predators. Tied with a bulky, segmented body, lifelike tail fibers, and soft materials that breathe in the water, this pattern is deadly when fished deep along the silty or muddy bottoms where Hex nymphs reside. Its natural coloration and profile make it a top choice both leading up to the hatch and year-round as a general attractor nymph.
Effective in lakes, slow rivers, and spring creeks, the Hex Nymph can be dead-drifted under an indicator, fished on a sink-tip line, or slowly retrieved along the bottom. During pre-hatch windows—especially in the hours before sunset—trout will gorge on migrating nymphs making their way toward the surface.
Best for:
- Pre-hatch Hexagenia feeding windows
- Stillwater lakes and silt-bottomed rivers
- Large trout, bass, and warmwater species
📌 Pro Tip: Use a two-fly rig with the Hex Nymph as your anchor and a smaller attractor or soft hackle above it—this covers multiple depths and boosts your chances.
