The Coachman has been catching trout since the 1830s: iridescent peacock herl body, white upright wings, and reddish-brown hackle. Few flies in the catalog predate it, and none have outlasted it—the peacock-and-white formula still reads as food in any river on earth.

It works as a general attractor when nothing specific is hatching, with white wings that hold visible in broken water and evening glare while the herl does the convincing underneath.

Best for:

  • All-purpose attractor duty
  • Riffles, seams, and shaded banks
  • Evening sessions in mixed light

📌 Pro Tip: Peacock herl is the oldest fish-catching material there is—when modern attractors get refused, two centuries of evidence say drift the Coachman through the same lane.
