Stimulator - Black

The Black Stimulator is a high-floating, heavily hackled dry fly designed by Randall Kaufmann to imitate adult stoneflies—particularly the dark species like the giant black stonefly (Pteronarcys) and other dark-winged adults that bring big trout to the surface with reckless confidence. Its palmered hackle, elk hair wing, and bushy silhouette ride high in turbulent water with exceptional visibility, creating the kind of surface disturbance and profile that fish see and commit to from distance. It's a big, bold dry fly built for big, bold water.

The Black Stimulator is a summer staple on Western freestone rivers during stonefly emergence, but its effectiveness extends well beyond a single hatch. The dark, bushy profile doubles as a convincing large caddis or general attractor pattern that draws strikes even when nothing specific is hatching. It holds its float through fast riffles, heavy pocket water, and choppy runs where slimmer dries get swamped, and it works beautifully as the top fly in a hopper-dropper rig—visible, buoyant, and productive on its own while supporting a nymph below.
