The Rusty Soft Hackle is a classic wet fly designed to imitate a spent mayfly returning to the water's surface to complete its life cycle. With its slim rusty-brown body and flowing soft hackle, this pattern presents a lifelike profile of a dying mayfly caught in the surface film or drifting just beneath it—an irresistible target for hungry trout.

Perfect for use during spinner falls or as a general emerger-style wet fly, the Rusty Soft Hackle can be fished in both rivers and stillwaters. It excels in low-light conditions or when trout are sipping spent insects delicately from the surface. This fly pairs beautifully with dry flies in a two-fly setup or can be swung through riffles and tailouts on its own.

To fish the Rusty Soft Hackle effectively, try a downstream swing or slow retrieve just under the surface. For rising trout during spinner falls, dead drift it just below or in the surface film to mimic a mayfly spinner's final moments.
