The Parachute Hopper – Red is a high-floating grasshopper imitation built around a parachute-style hackle that gives it a low, natural profile and unmatched visibility on the water. The red body adds a bold hit of color that reads as an attractor as much as an imitation—drawing attention on pressured water and standing out in broken current—while the parachute post rides up where you can track it through riffles, glare, and long drifts. Wrapped horizontally around the post, the parachute hackle sets the fly down softly and keeps it sitting flush in the surface film—exactly the way a struggling hopper looks to a trout looking up.

Grasshoppers mean big, confident eats, and this pattern is built to draw them through the warm months when hoppers are on the banks and trout are looking for a substantial meal. The red body gives you an attractor option when trout have seen a parade of natural hoppers and need a different look to commit. Fish it tight to grassy banks, drift it through seams and along undercuts, or use it as the buoyant lead fly in a hopper-dropper rig—its parachute float easily supports a nymph slung below. From summer terrestrial season on freestone rivers to meadow streams and stillwater edges, the Parachute Hopper – Red is a searching dry fly that brings fish up when nothing's hatching.

Best for:

  • Trout looking up during summer and early-fall terrestrial season
  • Pressured water and broken current where a bold color gets noticed
  • Anchoring a hopper-dropper rig with a nymph suspended below

📌 Pro Tip: Reach for the red body when fish have refused natural-colored hoppers—the shot of color often triggers a reaction eat from trout that have wised up. Fish it hard against the bank, give it the occasional twitch, and rig a beadhead nymph 18–24" below when fish want the meal under the surface.
