The Prince Nymph is the original, unweighted version of one of the most iconic nymph patterns in fly fishing. Developed by Doug Prince in the 1940s, its peacock herl body, white goose biot wings, and biot tail create the same distinctive, iridescent profile that has made the Prince family a staple in fly boxes worldwide. Without a beadhead, this version drifts with a lighter, more natural action in the water column—riding higher and settling slower than its weighted counterparts, which makes it ideal for shallower water, slower currents, and fish feeding in the upper half of the column.
The unweighted Prince Nymph fills a niche the beadhead versions can't—it excels in skinny water, gentle riffles, and the soft edges of runs where a heavier fly would blow through the strike zone too quickly. It's equally effective as a dropper behind a dry fly, where its lighter weight won't drag the indicator under but its peacock herl shimmer and distinctive silhouette still draw confident strikes. The same all-purpose, multi-insect imitation that makes every Prince Nymph productive, just calibrated for the water where finesse matters more than depth.
Best for:
- Shallow runs, gentle riffles, and slower-moving water
- Dropper fly behind a dry where lighter weight is needed
- Fish feeding in the upper water column rather than tight to the bottom
📌 Pro Tip: Trail the unweighted Prince Nymph 12–18 inches behind a buoyant dry fly in skinny water—the fly drifts just below the surface with a natural, unhurried descent that trout in shallow runs eat without hesitation, where a beadhead version would plunge past them.
