The Zug Bug is a peacock herl classic that has been fooling trout since the 1930s. Best known as an imitation of Isonychia (slate drake) nymphs, its iridescent body, peacock sword tail, and brown hackle collar also pass convincingly for caddis larvae and a range of dark mayfly nymphs—one fly suggesting many foods, which is exactly what makes a great searching pattern.
Unweighted, the Zug Bug drifts naturally at moderate depths and adapts to conditions: fish it shallow on a greased leader during emergences, add split shot to dredge deeper runs, or swing it through riffles like a traditional wet. It produces across an unusually wide range of rivers and conditions, which is why it has never left the standard fly box lineup.
Best for:
- Isonychia (slate drake) nymph activity
- All-purpose searching in riffles, runs, and pools
- Flexible rigging—shallow, deep, or on the swing
📌 Pro Tip: Isonychia nymphs are strong swimmers—unlike most nymphs, the Zug Bug fishes well with motion. Throw a few deliberate twitches or a slow lift into the drift to imitate that darting, athletic movement.
