The Black Ant is a time-tested terrestrial dry fly pattern that imitates the silhouette and behavior of a natural ant—an irresistible meal for trout from late spring through fall. Its segmented black body and minimalist profile make it a deadly choice when fishing grassy banks, undercut edges, and overhanging vegetation where real ants frequently end up in the water. This pattern excels when trout are feeding opportunistically between hatches or sipping tiny morsels in calm water.

Floating low in the surface film, the Black Ant creates a subtle but convincing silhouette that fools selective trout. It’s ideal for small creeks, spring creeks, and stillwater situations where fish get a long look at your presentation. Fish it on its own for the cleanest drift, or trail it behind a larger dry fly if visibility is an issue. This versatile ant pattern belongs in every angler’s terrestrial lineup.

Best for:

Summer terrestrial season
Stillwater and spring creeks
Matching subtle feeding behavior

📌 Pro Tip: Use 6X tippet and apply floatant only to the hackle to keep the fly riding low—just like a struggling ant caught in the surface film. Try trailing it behind a parachute-style dry to improve tracking.

I've shopped many fly shops online and the flies that show up can be either really good or really bad. Jackson Hole Fly Company has really good flies. They hold together well, don't lose their shape after hooking multiple fish before they need retired. I highly recommend JHFC!

Very fast shipping . Just the right size for my small trout streams. I live in Iowa and we have trout streams in northwest Iowa. It is a driftless zone. It looks very realistic. I am eager to try it.I will be back for Fly fishing stuff.
