The Mayfly – Black is a sleek, minimalist dry fly that imitates a dark-bodied adult mayfly, ideal for targeting selective trout during low-light hatches or overcast days. Its simple silhouette and subtle profile make it a deadly choice during late evening spinner falls or when trout are sipping tiny dark mayflies from the surface film.
Tied with a slim black body, upright wings, and a lightly hackled thorax, this pattern floats low and naturally—making it an excellent match for Baetis, Mahogany Duns, and other small mayflies with dark coloration. It performs especially well in slow to moderate currents, spring creeks, and clear tailwaters where fish get a long look at the fly.
Use a light tippet (5X–6X) and delicate presentation to get the most out of this fly. Pair it with a trailing emerger, such as an RS2 or a WD-40, during transitional stages of a hatch. A small amount of floatant on the wings and hackle will help keep it riding in the surface film where trout are feeding.
Best Time to Use:
- Spring and fall BWO or Mahogany Dun hatches
- Overcast afternoons or evenings with dark-bodied mayflies
