The Thor is a California steelhead classic from the 1930s, named for angler Walter Thoresen and built on a color recipe that still produces: an orange hackle-fiber tail, deep red chenille body, brown hackle collar, and a clean white bucktail wing. Warm, confident colors in a traditional hairwing silhouette.
The Thor occupies the productive middle ground between gaudy and natural—bright enough to be found in winter flows, sober enough not to alarm fish in clearing water. It swings beautifully on floating and sink-tip lines alike, and its sturdy hairwing construction shrugs off the grabs of hot fish.
Best for:
- Winter and early-spring steelhead swings
- Clearing water after a storm drops
- Classic hairwing presentations for salmon and steelhead
📌 Pro Tip: The Thor shines as rivers drop and clear after winter rains—when chrome fish are moving and the water's green tint mutes brighter flies, its red-and-white warmth hits the visibility sweet spot.
