The Popsicle is the flagship of George Cook's famous Alaskabou series—a full ball of layered marabou in hot pink and purple, finished with a red head, born in Bristol Bay and proven on every steelhead and salmon river since. Few flies move more water with less weight: the marabou flares, breathes, and collapses with every pulse of current.
The Popsicle's silhouette is enormous in the water yet nearly weightless to cast, making it the definitive swing fly for aggressive migratory fish. Kings, silvers, and steelhead all crush it, particularly in the cold, colored flows where a big, slow, pulsing target out-fishes everything small.
Best for:
- Steelhead and salmon on the swing
- Cold or colored water demanding a big silhouette
- Alaska, BC, and Pacific Northwest rivers
📌 Pro Tip: Fish it on a sink tip and let it hang at the end of every swing—the marabou keeps flaring in the current after the fly stops, and the dangle take is the Popsicle's signature move.
