The Picket Pin is a Montana centenarian that refuses to specialize: peacock herl body, palmered brown hackle, and a gray squirrel-tail wing. Floated, it's a caddis or stonefly; drowned and swung, it's an emerger or small baitfish. It has filled every one of those jobs since the 1910s.
The squirrel wing is the signature—durable, lifelike, and equally convincing wet or dry, which is why old-timers fished it through the whole drift and modern anglers should too.
Best for:
- Dry-then-swing presentations
- Caddis and stonefly water
- All-purpose searching duty
📌 Pro Tip: Never lift at the end of the drift—let it swing under and hang; a century of Picket Pin fish have come on exactly that drowned arc.
