The Mosquito is one of the oldest standards in the dry fly box: a banded light-and-dark body under grizzly hackle with grizzly hackle-tip wings. The barred materials create the striped, leggy look of the insect everyone recognizes—and the fish do too.
Beyond the literal match on stillwaters and slow sloughs, it doubles as a fine midge-cluster and general gray-mayfly imitation, which is why it has never left the catalog in a century.
Best for:
- Stillwaters, ponds, and slow sloughs
- Midge and gray-insect feeding
- High-country lakes in summer
📌 Pro Tip: On alpine lakes, cast it ahead of cruising fish and leave it dead still—the grizzly barring does the imitating, and any twitch breaks the spell.
