The Helgramite imitates the fierce dobsonfly larva—a big, dark, segmented predator that lives under rocks and ranks among the largest meals in any freestone river. Tied with a fat dark body, soft legs, and pincer-suggesting tails, it's a mouthful trout and smallmouth never pass up.

Hellgrammites live for years before hatching, so they're available year-round; a big dark one tumbling in the drift is reliably eaten.
