The Comet is one of steelheading's original weighted flies—a long flowing orange tail, gold tinsel body, orange hackle, and silver bead-chain eyes that tip it nose-down on the strip. Born for California's coastal rivers in the 1950s, the design's comet-like trailing tail gave the fly its name and its action.
The Comet fishes deeper than its profile suggests: the eyes drive a jigging dip-and-rise that flutters the long tail with every pulse. Hot orange and gold make it a stained-water and salmon-run standout—kings and silvers eat it as readily as steelhead, especially when fall rivers carry a little color.
Best for:
- Steelhead and salmon in stained fall flows
- Jigging, dipping presentations along the bottom
- Coastal rivers from California to Alaska
📌 Pro Tip: Fish the Comet with a twitch in the swing—short rod-tip pulses make the bead-chain head dip and the long tail kick, the exact action this design was invented to produce.
